The Approach
I feel like it’s been a little while since I’ve talked about my shooting style. This is something that is always discussed at my client consultations, so I figured I’d give you the inside scoop.
I take a very conversational approach when posing my couples. There are many reasons for this but a few of the top ones are:
1) Communication is key. If I don’t communicate my vision for the shot or share some posing tips that will really elevate the image, then I’m not doing my job to the best of my ability. You’re hiring me for my expertise & it’s my responsibility to walk you through the process.
2) There’s nothing worse than standing in front of someone’s camera in utter silence. I’ve been there & felt SO self-conscious & had no idea if what I was doing was what the photographer wanted me to do. Literally no one feels natural being photographed. It’s a vulnerable feeling to be the center of attention & at times it can be intimidating. This is one of the key reasons I keep conversation going throughout my sessions. I want you to feel comfortable & natural, like we’re just hanging out & I happen to have my camera with me. Silence & lack of feedback will only elevate that discomfort & will result in stiff, unnatural photos. The more relaxed you are, the more I’ll get to see your true personalities which is the whole purpose of photographs. To document YOU.
3) I want you to enjoy your session. For all you women out there, I know it can take a lot of convincing to talk your man into a photo shoot. One of my goals is to make it a very smooth & painless process for you & your man. Because let’s be real, nothing is worse than showing up to a shoot frustrated with each other. He’s annoyed that he agreed to it, you’re annoyed that he’s annoyed & you’re feeding off each other’s energy … I think you get it. It can be quite the downward spiral which will translate into your photos & I’m pretty sure THOSE aren’t the memories you want documented for years to come.
