That variety is one of the reasons I love photographing weddings here.

There are so many different ways to experience a Malibu wedding that choosing a venue often comes down to the kind of experience you want your guests to have.

When I'm photographing a venue for the first time, I'm not only looking at where the ceremony and reception will take place.
I'm paying attention to how the property moves.
Where does the best light fall?

what makes malibu weddings different
The geography of Malibu has a lot to do with how a wedding here feels.
You can be surrounded by canyon walls and mature trees one moment and looking out across the Pacific the next. A venue can feel completely secluded while being only a short drive from Los Angeles. A hilltop celebration can feel expansive and dramatic, while a wedding tucked into the canyon can feel almost hidden.
That variety also means there isn't one visual formula for photographing a Malibu wedding.
The way I approach a wedding at a vineyard is different from how I approach a celebration overlooking the ocean. A wooded property calls for different compositions than a hilltop estate. An oceanfront ceremony may be about scale and horizon, while an intimate canyon setting may be about texture, movement and the relationships happening within the frame.
I don't want to impose the same aesthetic on every venue.
I want the photographs to feel like they belong to the place where your wedding actually happened.
Another important thing to note is if your wedding is in the Malibu canyons versus on a hilltop, you will loose light earlier as the sun drops behind the mountains. You'll want to keep this in mind when planning your wedding photography timeline, specifically magic hour photos.
