There is something especially beautiful about a Calamigos Ranch wedding in the fall. Set in the hills of Malibu, the property has a feeling that is difficult to replicate: romantic and naturally beautiful, but still refined enough to feel elevated and intentional.
For Rebecca and Aaron, that balance was exactly right.
Their Calamigos Ranch wedding took place at the Pavilion, one of my favorite spaces on the property and, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful settings for an outdoor wedding in Malibu. Surrounded by mature oak trees and natural textures, the Pavilion feels tucked away from the rest of the world. It has an effortless romance that doesn’t need much embellishment.
And as a Malibu wedding photographer who is drawn to light, texture and movement, it is an incredible place to work.

One of my favorite details from their entire Calamigos Ranch wedding was Rebecca’s dress.
Her Suzanne Neville gown was elegant, refined and incredibly chic. It fit her figure beautifully while still incorporating delicate textural details that made it photograph beautifully from every angle.
To this day, it is still one of my favorite wedding dresses I have photographed.
I loved that it felt timeless without feeling traditional in a predictable way. The clean silhouette gave her an effortless elegance, while the subtle texture added visual interest in photographs.
That combination worked particularly well against the natural setting of Calamigos Ranch. The simplicity of the gown allowed the landscape, the light and the movement of the day to become part of the story rather than competing with the dress.

The Pavilion is my favorite space at Calamigos Ranch because it feels both outdoorsy and sophisticated. The architecture gives the setting a sense of refinement, while the surrounding landscape keeps everything feeling organic and relaxed.
The oak trees are a huge part of what makes this space so special to me. Trees have always been an important source of inspiration in my work because they naturally bring together three things I am constantly looking for when I photograph: light, texture and movement.
At the Pavilion, light filters through the oak branches throughout the day, creating changing patterns and layers across the landscape. The leaves move with the breeze. Shadows shift. The texture of the trees adds depth to photographs without requiring anything artificial.
It is the kind of setting where I can create portraits that feel editorial and polished while still feeling completely connected to the environment.
For a couple considering Calamigos Ranch as a Malibu wedding venue, I also love that the property offers so much visual variety. A wedding can feel like it takes place in several different environments without ever having to leave the property.
There are the oak trees surrounding the Pavilion, the vineyards, the main lawn and the twinkle-lit archway, each offering something different for portraits and storytelling.
That variety is especially valuable on a wedding day because it allows your photographs to have a sense of progression. Instead of every portrait looking like it was taken in the same location, the gallery can move between intimate, expansive, romantic and editorial moments while still feeling cohesive.

Rebecca and Aaron’s ceremony design was a beautiful example of how restraint can actually make a design feel more impactful.
Their chuppah was minimal in structure, allowing the elements that mattered most to take center stage: the Tallit, the florals and, of course, Rebecca and Aaron.
I loved how clean the overall composition felt. Rather than competing with the couple or the natural surroundings, the chuppah became a beautiful frame for them.
Against the oak trees and natural landscape of the Pavilion, the simplicity of the design felt incredibly intentional.
This is something I find myself coming back to often when photographing weddings: the most memorable images don’t necessarily come from having more. Sometimes the most beautiful photograph is created when there is enough space for the important elements to breathe.

One of the things I appreciate most about photographing weddings at Calamigos Ranch is the opportunity to tell a complete visual story without making the day feel like a photo shoot.
The property naturally gives us options.
The oak trees around the Pavilion create a romantic, intimate setting for portraits. The vineyards offer a completely different feeling, with more openness and an expansive sense of place. The main lawn allows for larger-scale photographs, while the twinkle-lit archway creates a beautiful transition into the evening.
For me, the goal isn’t simply to photograph a couple in every available location. It is to use the property intentionally so that each location contributes something different to their gallery.
Some photographs should feel quiet and intimate. Others should give you a sense of place. Some should focus on the two of you, while others should remind you what it felt like to be surrounded by everyone you love.
That combination is what makes a wedding gallery feel immersive rather than simply a collection of beautiful portraits.

Rain was looming throughout Rebecca and Aaron’s wedding day, which added an extra layer of anticipation to the afternoon.
Thankfully, the weather held off for most of the celebration.
There is something particularly beautiful about photographing a wedding when the weather is unpredictable. The light can become softer and more atmospheric, the landscape feels especially lush, and everyone becomes just a little more present in the moment.
Rebecca and Aaron were able to enjoy the outdoor setting they had envisioned, and the overcast conditions created a beautiful softness throughout much of their photographs.
It was a reminder that perfect wedding weather doesn’t necessarily mean blue skies. Sometimes the most beautiful light arrives when you least expect it.

The bridesmaids wore a combination of solid and patterned dresses in burnt orange and taupe, creating beautiful depth and dimension throughout the bridal party portraits.
I especially loved that the colors nodded to the season without making the wedding feel overly themed.
The burnt orange brought warmth into the photographs, while the taupe softened the palette and connected beautifully with the natural tones of the oak trees, grasses and surrounding landscape.
It is a good example of why I love fall weddings at Calamigos Ranch. You don’t necessarily need obvious seasonal details to make a wedding feel like fall. The environment already gives you so much to work with.
A thoughtful color palette can simply enhance what is already there.

What I loved most about Rebecca and Aaron’s wedding was how naturally all of the pieces worked together.
The setting was romantic without feeling overly formal. The design was refined without feeling overdone. Rebecca’s dress was timeless and sophisticated, while the burnt orange and taupe bridal party attire brought warmth and personality to the photographs.
And then there was the Pavilion itself: the oak trees, the changing light, the natural textures and all of the little spaces throughout the property that allowed their story to unfold visually.
For couples looking for a Malibu wedding venue that offers a sense of place, beautiful natural surroundings and plenty of variety for photographs, Calamigos Ranch is a remarkable setting.
And if you are considering a Calamigos Ranch wedding, I would encourage you to think beyond simply choosing a beautiful venue. Think about how the setting can become part of your story.
For me, that is always the goal.
Not just beautiful photographs, but photographs that make you remember the light, the texture, the movement, the people and, most importantly, how it all felt.
