That feeling of escape is exactly what I love about photographing here.

There is an exclusivity to Hotel Bel Air that never feels flashy. It feels more like being invited into a beautifully hidden private estate than staying at a traditional Los Angeles hotel. And then there is the light.

Greengate Ranch & Vineyard is one of my favorite kinds of wedding venues: a place where the wedding can unfold over an entire weekend.

Set on 140 acres in Edna Valley wine country, the former horse ranch combines rolling vineyards, mature trees, lawns, a wood barn, a courtyard, pool and spa areas, and multiple guest houses. The property is designed for couples who want to gather their closest people together and make the venue part of the entire experience.

That makes Greengate feel less like a traditional venue and more like a private retreat.

From a photography standpoint, I love the range. What Makes a Wedding Venue Photograph Well?

A beautiful venue is only the beginning.

When I scout a wedding venue, I’m looking for the things that will give your photographs depth and variety throughout the entire day. I pay attention to the quality and direction of the light, architectural lines, places to photograph through, interesting textures, movement between spaces, quiet corners for intimate moments, and larger environments that allow the story to breathe.

I also want to know what happens when the sun goes down.

Some of my favorite wedding photographs happen in that transition between day and night, when the sky is still holding onto a little color, the lights begin to glow, and the energy of the celebration starts to shift.
